A complaint we take every June: the dishwasher has stopped drying, and it dried perfectly in February. In a good number of these the machine is working exactly as designed.
Two different ways of drying
Older machines and most American-built units dry with a heating element in the base. Hot air, wet dishes, water evaporates and the vent lets it out. Reliable, and hard on plastics.
European machines mostly use condenser drying. There is no element. The stainless tub is cooled by the room, moisture condenses on the tub wall and runs away, and the drying happens because the kitchen is cooler and drier than the inside of the machine.
Which is fine in a dry kitchen. In a Florida kitchen in August, with the door closed and the air conditioning struggling, the difference the machine depends on is barely there. So the dishes come out damp, seasonally, and it is not a repair.
What actually helps
- Crack the door as soon as the cycle ends rather than an hour later. Most of the drying happens in the first ten minutes.
- Keep the rinse aid reservoir full. It changes how water sheets off a surface and it is the single biggest lever on this machine.
- Load plastics on the top rack and expect them to stay damp regardless. They have no thermal mass to work with.
- Run the machine in the evening with the kitchen cooler rather than at midday.
When it is genuinely a repair
On an element-dried machine, no heat in the dry cycle is the element or the circuit driving it, and both are ordinary work. On a machine using a zeolite drying module, that module is a real part that fails. And a door seal that has taken a set lets humid room air in throughout the cycle, which undoes everything.
