- Making no ice at all
- Water supply first: a saddle valve slowly closing, a frozen fill tube, or a filter so loaded that flow has dropped below the threshold the machine needs. Only then do we look at the harvest circuit.
- Hollow, cloudy or slow-forming cubes
- A fill valve metering short, or a thermostat harvesting early. Cloudy ice is usually air and minerals in the supply rather than a fault in the machine.
- Ice tastes or smells wrong
- Almost always the filter or the bin, not the machine. Ice absorbs odor from anything sharing the freezer, and a filter past its date will pass taste straight through.
- Machine runs constantly, bin never fills
- The bin thermostat or the level sensor that tells it to stop. On nugget machines an auger bearing dragging will do the same thing.
- Water pooling beneath the unit
- The drain line, the pump on machines that have one, or a bin gasket that has gone hard. Undercounter units are gravity drained and a slight settle in the cabinet is enough to stop them draining.
- Loud grinding while harvesting
- On nugget machines, the auger gearbox. On cubers, the evaporator releasing a slab that has bridged. One is serious and one is not, and they sound very similar.
